![]() Principal's Message The Character Word of the Month is Responsibility . Being responsible means that others can depend on you. It's doing things to the best of your ability.
At Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary, we follow the 3 R's in our daily interactions with eachother, our students and our parents. The 3 R's are easy to follow: Respect- you treat people the way you want to be treated; Responsibility- you do your job every day, if you're a student, your job is to do your very best on your behavior, your assignments and your home work; Reflect- always think before you say it, and think before you do it. If students, teachers, adults and people in general would follow the 3 R's in their daily lives, this world would be a much better place to live for all of us.
At Martin Luther King, we are very proud of our student's accomplishments. In 2007-2008, we made AYP in 4th grade Writing, as measured on the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL). In 2008-2009, we made AYP in 3rd grade Math and Reading as measured on the WASL. In 2008-2009, as a whole school, we also made AYP in attendance. Our students love to come to school. These accomplishments are no accident. We work very hard with all our students in all core subject areas to close the achievement gap and make sure all our students learn to read, write, compute math and understand science concepts at grade level. That statement is not just a slogan nor just part of our letterhead. It's our commitment to excellence in education. We use a scientifically based research driven reading and math curriculum to teach our students the best way we know how in Reading, Math and Science.
Don't forget, a parent is a child's first teacher and continues to influence the student's educational process throughout their academic career. We encourage all our parents and our community supporters to visit our classrooms, attend school events, and participate on district and school advisory committees. We feel confident that our students will benefit from these collaborations which will help all students reach their highest levels of achievements and proficiency in school and in life.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call us at 509-573-1100 to get information or set up an appointment for a visit.
Thank you and we look forward to hearing from you,
Phil Vasquez, Principal Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary, YSD
