Character trait for November is  Responsibility

Being responsible means that others can depend on you.  It is doing something well and to the best of your ability.

  Message From the Principal

Welcome back!  I hope you had a great summer.  I am Victor Nourani, the new Principal at Lewis & Clark, and I look forward to meeting all of you.  I was formerly the Principal at Stanton Academy for three years.  I believe school is an extension of the student's home, and I encourage parents/guardians and families to partner with the school in an effort to accelerate student learning.

We are fortunate to have Mrs. Coe continue as Vice Principal, and, in addition, we welcome Mr. Garza as our new Vice Principal from Wilson Middle School.

This has been a busy summer for administrators: Mr. Garza, Mrs. Coe, and myself.  The school year is fast approaching and we are busy preparing to meet our incoming 6th graders and to welcome back our 7th and 8th graders.  School starts Tuesday, September 1st.  We are excited to offer your students the best academic programs we can deliver.  We will be in the sixth year of "Encore! A Fine and Applied Arts Magnet Program." We are  continuing interdisciplinary teaming which means the teachers share students on their teams for the core subject of English, Social Studies, Math, Science and Reading.  It also means that students are held accountable for what is being taught.  The state has established four learning goals, and we will be continuing to focus classroom instruction and staff development on these goals as part of our continuing efforts to increase student learning.

Goal 1 -Read with comprehension, write with skill, and communicate effectively and responsibly in a variety of ways and settings.

Goal 2 -Know and apply the core concepts and principles of mathematics:  social, physical, and life sciences; civics and history; geography; arts; and health and fitness.

Goal 3 -Think analytically, logically, and creatively, and to integrate experience and knowledge to form reasoned judgments and solve problems.

Goal 4 -Understand the importance of work and how performance, effort, and decisions directly affect future career and educational opportunities.

The Yakima School District "student accountability" plan has been implemented.  What this means for students is the  possibility of the students not being promoted to the next grade level unless they are  passing their core academic classes.  Students have to demonstrate the skills necessary to be successful at the next grade level.

We are continuing a school family and community partnership to maintain a safe, civil, healthy and intellectually stimulating learning environment to insure student achievement.  Enclosed is a copy of the STARR rules that support our "Blazer Steps to Success."  Please take a few minutes to go over these with your son/daughter.

There will be an athletic parent/student informational meeting on Tuesday, September 2nd at 6:30 p.m. in the Lewis and Clark commons.

We are here to work with you and your children, and we are looking forward to this school year.  If you have any questions or need assistance please come by the school or give me a call at 573-2201.

Victor Nourani, Principal
